Sponsor Dependent Child

Sponsoring your dependent child is an option for Canadians who have obtained status for themselves and who seek to be reunited with their dependents abroad.

Eligible Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents who qualify to sponsor may facilitate their dependent for permanent resident status.

In order to qualify as a Sponsor, you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a Canadian Citizen, Registered Indian or Permanent Resident
  • Be sponsoring a member of the family Class
  • Sign an undertaking

To be eligible for sponsorship, children must:

  • meet the definition of a dependent   child
  • either be a biological or adopted child of a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • not be married or in a common-law relationship
  • be under the age of 22 (a child over the age of 22 will be considered a dependent if they suffer from a physical or mental condition that prevents them from being able to support themselves)

Parents wishing to sponsor their child must:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident living in Canada
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Not be in prison, charged with a serious offense, or bankrupt
